YABCU™ (Yet Another Boring Cat Update)

Two nights ago, as Matt sauntered past The Chair *evil chord*, I picked him up and deposited him in my "lap" (in the empty space between my legs while the chair is reclined). He thought about it for a second, then sat down. He let me pet him for a minute, then settled in for several minutes of biting, kicking, licking, and scratching (I think they have fleas or allergies). When done, he hopped down.

Last night, as he once again sauntered past The Chair *evil chord*, I picked him up and deposited him in my "lap". I happened to be eating yogurt at the time. Publix store-brand Honey Almond flavor (ambrosia!), to be precise.

Matt thought that smelled pretty darned good. And stood on me to prove it. He kept "lunging" at the spoon, but I didn't let him have any until I had finished, and then I held out the empty container to him.

He licked it for a good while. I would have sworn cats didn't like sweet stuff. Hmph.

Then he let me pet him for a while, settled in for a session of biting, kicking, licking, and scratching, and then took a nap.

Yes, he actually slept in my "lap." And when I had to get up and started to lower the foot portion of The Chair *evil chord*, he walked up it closer to me and got in my true lap until I shooed him down.

He was fine right up to the point where I stood up. And then it was "Aieeeeeee! WILL EAT ME IF IT CATCHES ME!" again and we're back to square one.

So to sum up: Lucy is fully acclimatized. Matt is as long as I'm seated. If I stand up, I become evil.

This morning when I fed "them" "their" can of food, Matt almost didn't wait until I was gone from the room before dashing in to see if he could actually get some of the food, this time.

I actually don't think he sees well, which could lend to the whole "evil if it stands up" thing.

Ah, well. The Taming of the Matt continues apace.

As far as Lucy goes, I wanted to see if she even knew what playing was. So I got out Gremlin's old sparkly toy (a clear plastic rod with über-sparkly foil streamers on the other end) and tested my theory.

She watched it, then swatted it. I moved it again. She swatted it again. I moved it a third time. She SWATTED THE CRAP OUT OF IT AND PROCEEDED TO TRY TO EVISCERATE THE SPARKLY TOY.

Results of experiment: Unambiguous predator behavior. Not cute, not playful: deadly.

Matt...looks at the toy. And ignores it entirely. It's not small, furry, and tasty, and is therefore not worth his time or effort.

Cats have really weird tastes. Here's a listing of my cats' favorite people foods.

Isis: ginger snaps, angel food cake, Kashi 7 grain crackers (plain). cheese, yogurt, ice cream.
Claire: cheese? prefers salmon over tuna.
Mylene: normal cat stuff, like cheese and milk and milk-based products.
Luna: Kashi 7 grain crackers (plain), salt and vinegar potato chips. (WTF?)
Meyrin: not into people food, cat treats, or wet food. Except cheese.

Claire is my mighty hunter. She's why we don't have little plastic fur-covered mice: she EATS THEM. Including the plastic. Also, she gets very possessive of any fur thing.

I wonder if we have any crack balls floating around. (Catnip. Compressed into convenient ball form. Best cat toy ever, as long as your cat likes the nip.)

One cat we had growing up, loved pasta in any form. Wasn't an orange-and-striped cat, but she was plump. (Also growled at you as soon she took an offered bit of food from your hand. Strange cat, but otherwise good.)

Then there was the cat brought with me to my parents one Christmas. One day, I'm sitting on the couch, and my mother walks out of the kitchen, holding a well-chewed loaf of bread (in its plastic bag), and looking at me accusingly.

*shrug* Some cats like carbohydrates and starch, I guess.

My fat kitty (Claire) is white with orange spots. My marmalade tabby (Mylene) is tiny. Both my torties are nuts.

Isis hates one of my friends. Swats and hisses every time he comes by. So we were out of town, and this friend was cat sitting for us. He gave Isis a treat, thinking maybe she'd like him. Isis hissed as she took the treat, then purred while she ate it. Silly, adorable, evil kitty. (My mom's chow chow was terrified of her, too. Isis swatted her on the nose once, and after that, the dog was terrified.)

Oh, she might like this...
My mother-in-law's former feral actually DESTROYED it and still looks for it longingly every day. (I gotta get her another one...)

My kitty-boys LOVE this thing. LOVE it.

I would have sworn cats didn't like sweet stuff. Hmph.

I think they're like people - they're all different. My retired cat likes chocolate cake, for example.

(Yes, yes, I know. She doesn't get very much.)

Seth, the licky tabby, stood in the kitchen with me and ate a good dozen small pieces of dried mango one day. He was still begging for more when I put it away, but I had a flash of what that might do to his insides, so we stopped for the day.
