Rules Are Rules

My company is on a "green" kick. They've removed 1/3 of the fluorescent bulbs from all the fixtures (each fixture has three bulbs, or did). Issued all of us mugs and plastic cups so they could quit making Styrofoam cups available for our free sodas. Bought all of us little blue trash cans for recyclables.

And with that last item—the blue cans—came a "Commercial Recycling Tips" handout. It has two columns on it: Do Recycle and Don't Recycle.

Items in the Don't Recycle column are:
Food
Food waste (leftovers) [What, no compost heap in the corner of the parking lot?]
Styrofoam
Tissues
Napkins
Paper towels
Plastic wrapping
Dirty aluminum foil
And I'm fine with all of those. But here's where it takes a turn toward the surreal:
Carpeting
Wood or lumber
Light bulbs
Mirrors
Paint or hazardous waste
o.O

Methinks they copied this, unedited, from a handout aimed at people other than cube-farm dwellers.

Of course, now what am I going to do with all these carpet scraps, lumber, burnt-out light bulbs, broken mirrors, old paint, and depleted uranium that I've been saving up for the express purpose of recycling them?

Maybe they are covering themselves in case you decide to do a little cube remodeling?

If you worked here, you could coat them in chocolate and serve them at the next goodie day. I'm sure someone would eat them.

I'll take the depleted uranium - always wanted to play with the stuff

I am laughing at the decreased light bulbs. That's just being cheap and not green. You are already using less energy by them being fluorescent

Yeah, I declined to point that out because why rock the boat, right? :)

But I did suggest replacing all the CRT monitors with LCD monitors. And I'm toying with the idea of "work from home one day each week," although I know that won't go anywhere. Our VP hates working from home, so none of his group is allowed to do so except when absolutely required.

The whole "recycle" thing is a ploy to reduce garbage costs. Buy turning your garbage can into a "recycling bin" they can empty it less often, saving cleaning crew costs.

Except they already empty our "garbage" cans every night, even after telling us they were moving to an every-other-day schedule. So all they're actually doing is ADDING another trip. It saves nothing.
